How to Use Essential Oils + Where To Buy Them

When I started blogging, I never had any intention to promote products. I simply wanted to get the word out about work from anywhere job opportunities to help navigate the modern self-employment world.
Like many people in this busy world, I have a strong underlying desire to connect my mind and body and am acutely aware that physical and mental well-being are connected. I love natural products, and try to use them as much as possible within reason. I’ve actually been transitioning most of the products in our household over to products with less chemicals for the last year or so. At that time, I also decided to start experimenting with essential oils because of my anxiety.
What are oils?
By definition, essential oils are the vital (and aromatic) fluids of a plant, shrub, root, herb, flower, seed or tree.
We actually use essential oils a lot in every day life. They are used to flavor foods and can be found in things like toothpaste and mouthwash to give it that minty kick. Oils are also in perfumes and skin care products. Unfortunately, not all oils are created equally. Oils found in food and cosmetics are typically something that is synthetic; your body processes it as a toxin therefore it becomes harder to break down or can be stored in fat cells. These types of synthetic oils work against your body.
Therapeutic grade oils work with your body. Within 20 minutes of application, they can be found in every cell. These pure oils are distilled from the “life blood”of plants and contain the plant’s own immunity, hormones, and scents. When you pick a rose and break off the stem, you’ll always notice there is a bit of watery substance. This is the source that pure essential oils come from.
There have been countless testimonies of people and families receiving amazing benefits from pure, therapeutic grade essential oils. These stories were the reason I started using essential oils a few years back.
Originally, I ordered my essential oils online from Amazon. Then, while visiting my partner’s family, my sister-in-law introduced me to the amazing world of therapeutic grade essential oils and I WAS HOOKED. That night, she gave me a few drops of lavender essential oil and I slept through the night for the first time in weeks. I quickly realized first-hand the health benefits of PURE essential oils.
I began using essential oils for a variety of purposes- From my cats, to that dreaded anxiety and even in my cooking.
None of the oils I had been buying from HERE had the dramatic positive effects on me like Young Living’s essential oils did – and here’s why:
A majority of the oils at grocery stores and Amazon that call themselves essential oils, are nothing like pure, therapeutic-grade essential oils. Some of them call themselves this simply because they smell what they are ‘supposed’ to smell like, and many of them are full of fillers and chemicals to try and synthesize that smell. They are also often sent to you diluted, tainted, or very, very old.
It’s also important to note, most of these types of ‘essential oils’ CANNOT be ingested or used topically – yikes. Why would I want to breathe something into my lungs if it isn’t considered safe enough to be put on my skin?
Instead, therapeutic-grade essential oils derive the oil directly from plants. The oil is extracted gently, with very little pressure and heat. This way, chemicals aren’t added during the extraction process and the pure oil doesn’t get damaged. THESE are the kind of essential oils that I want to use on my body and with my family.
Because there is such a HUGE differences in the quality of essential oils that are available, here are some tips to spot high quality, therapeutic-grade essential oils:
- The essential oil brand’s specific species of plants/herbs being used are of the highest-quality.
- The essential oil brand has their own lab to test the oil’s composition after extraction. Check out the testing process here.
- The essential oil brand continuously monitors the distillation to ensure produced oils contain all of the exact therapeutic components.
- The essential oil brand’s outside suppliers (if it uses them) don’t use added chemicals.
- The essential oil brand guarantees that the land used to grow the herbs and plants are free of chemicals, pesticides and herbicides.
- The essential oil brand’s outside suppliers (if it uses them) don’t use contaminates like chemicals, pesticides or herbicides to grow their herbs and plants.
- The essential oil brand guarantees that nothing is added to the oils during bottling.
- The essential oil brand visits the farms and oil distilleries to observe the process.
- The essential oil brand only uses crops that were harvested at their peak time.
I feel silly for waiting until my late twenties to integrate essential oils into my life, especially when people have been using them for thousands of years. Believe me when I say, I have never felt healthier and more full of life, physically and emotionally.
Why I chose Young Living
The brand my sister-in-law was using and I quickly fell in love with is called Young Living. I began to research the company and figured out quickly Young Living is awesome and the essential oil brand I wanted to buy my essential oils from.
When companies use chemical solvents to extract essential oils, which is a common distillation method, the integrity of the oil is compromised and some of the beneficial therapeutic qualities are destroyed. There is currently no regulation for extraction essential oils, so finding a brand that guarantees their processes is vital, and that’s exactly what Young Living does. Here’s the other reasons I buy my essential oils from Young Living:
- They are a worldwide leader in essential oils; a household name with over 20 years in operation and the pioneers of therapeutic-grade essential oils.
- They inspect each bottle of essential oil in their state-of-the-art facilities before shipment.
- They own their own farms (the only essential oil brand in the world to do so).
- They weed by hand.
- They only use the first dilatation of oils (some brands use the 2nd and 3rd as well).
- They use their own oils for pest control.
- They extract oil without using ANY chemicals.
- They use steam distillation and cold pressing to preserve therapeutic properties of the essential oil.
- Young Living has a ‘Seed to Seal’ guarantee, which are stringent qualifications for quality and purity.
- Their oil is potent and 100% pure.
- I can liked that could sign up as a Young Living member and not have to sell ANYTHING to anyone.

How I Use Essential Oils
For The Littles:
Also, I’d be lost without this guide. It’s Essential Oils Natural Remedies: The Complete A-Z Reference of Essential Oils for Health and Healing and I highly, HIGHLY recommend it. Even if you haven’t used essential oils yet!
As soon as I became a Young Living member, I started using essential oils and essential oil infused products DAILY.
I use essential oils aromatically (in a cute diffuser that came with my starter kit) to usually to help improve my mood, calm my emotions, keep my focused, help me sleep and sometimes help with my occasional headaches and sinus issues.
I use some essential oils topically (on my skin) with coconut oil as a carrier for massage and tension, or for the reasons above when I’m not near my diffuser and/or am in a public space (always consult the label of each essential oil first).
I ingest some essential oils when I use them as ingredients in cooking and baking. Oregano, nutmeg, rosemary, ginger, basil, clove and cinnamon are my favorites in this category (always consult the label of each essential oil first).
My entire family is now using Young Living essential oils on a daily basis. My partner has been using the oils as well, sometimes more than I do! We’ve also been using the oil on our cat for stress issues, and she’s been acting so much better, it’s frankly unbelievable!

Frequently Asked Questions:
Are Young Living’s products tested on animals?
ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY, NOT.
Young Living’s products are formulated to be safe for nearly all users, and animal testing is neither required nor performed in our product development process. ?
Does signing up mean that I will have to sell oils to people?
Nope! You are not required to sell anything at all to anyone. When you become a wholesale member, you get a special link that you can share with friends and get credit from their purchases, but there are no minimum sales amounts at all. In fact, 90% of the wholesale members in Young Living don’t do the business side at all. They are buying from Young Living because of the quality alone.
If you ARE interested in the business side then read how to Join Our Team! We have ALL the resources to help you get started with earning an income from Young Living as well. But before getting started with the business, I suggest taking some time with your new goodies and starter kit to get to know and love the products. ?
Am I required to make a minimum purchase each month?
Nope, there are absolutely NO minimum monthly purchase requirements. To remain a wholesale member, you have to make $50 worth of purchases per year to keep your membership. If there’s a year that you don’t make a $50 purchase, you can simply reinstate your wholesale membership discount by just placing a $50 order.
If you do find yourself making regular purchases each month, then you’ll definitely save money by joining the Essential Rewards program. That program does have a minimum monthly purchase requirement, but you can be a wholesale member without being part of the Essential Rewards program. (It’s pretty much like a ‘punch card’ program where you earn ‘store’ credit from purchases.)
Why should I buy from Young Living instead of other essential oils companies?
I can’t speak to the quality of other companies, but Young Living is the only company in my research that has their own farms (in the part of the world where the plants GROW NATURALLY, could absolutely guarantee that no pesticides/herbicides are used in the growing of any of their oils (they do all of the weeding by hand and do not spray ANY chemicals on the plant – even the chemicals approved for use in organic farming), has their own testing equipment (they do both in-house and 3rd party testing, and only uses the first distillation of oils instead of adding chemicals to get more out of the plant.
And my FAVORITE part about Young Living is that they are a full-disclosure company. This means the farms, participate in the harvesting and distillation, view the Young Living labs, and see the entire process! That’s not an option with any other company.
Does Young Living only sell essential oils?
Young Living focuses on essential oils, but has a line of personal care products, supplements, meal replacements, energy drinks, and more. Almost every product incorporates essential oils (thieves is absolutely wonderful in cleaning products).
What if I live outside of the United States?
For our friends to the north who live in Canada, I will still mail the bonus goodies to you, at no additional cost!
